"Los Angeles Dodgers consider Mookie Betts as part-time shortstop amid injury woes"

Mookie Betts, whose wife is expecting their second child, was placed on the paternity list on Tuesday. However, he is expected to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ lineup for Wednesday’s series finale against the New York Mets. When he does, he might fill in as a part-time shortstop. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts joked that they’ll see about it. Chris Taylor suffered an injury to his left side on Monday, and Gavin Lux is out for the year with a torn ACL. That leaves Miguel Rojas, who’s batting .129/.182/.161 through his first 10 games, as the only shortstop on the roster. Taylor did some agility work on Tuesday and has not been placed on the injured list. Betts takes ground balls at the position every day and has been asking for a start there for some time. Roberts believes that there would be no health risks involved with Betts starting at shortstop. Betts played as a second baseman and impressed defensively, with 15 starts at the position since joining the Dodgers in 2020. Although shortstop is a different animal, Roberts said that Betts “looks extremely natural there.” Roberts said that having Mookie as the third-string at any position is better than most teams, although he hopes that Taylor’s injury is minimal.
