How Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Batting Woes are Hurting Their IPL 2023 Campaign
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL 2023 campaign has been a tale of bowling excellence and batting inconsistency. With only six points from nine games, the 2016 champions are struggling to find a winning formula, currently sitting second from the bottom of the points table. Despite the heroics of their bowlers, Sunrisers’ lack of impact with the bat has cost them dearly this season.
Early Wickets and Lack of Partnerships Hurting Sunrisers
Head coach Brian Lara pointed out that early wickets and the lack of partnerships have been the primary reasons for Sunrisers’ batting struggles. In their recent match against Kolkata Knight Riders, they failed to chase down 172 and fell short by six runs, with Varun Chakaravarthy defending eight runs in the final over. Lara emphasized the need for match-awareness and partnerships to complement their aggressive intent.
Sunrisers’ Powerplay Woes Continue
Sunrisers’ batting woes have been particularly evident in the powerplay, where they have lost a couple of wickets consistently, setting them back in their run chase. While they managed 53 runs in the powerplay against Kolkata Knight Riders, they also lost three wickets in the process, putting them under pressure.
Klaasen and Markram’s Partnership Not Enough
Sunrisers’ batting lineup boasts of some quality players, with Heinrich Klaasen batting tremendously well for them. But Lara lamented the fact that Klaasen often has to do all the hard work coming in at No.6, after five quality players before him. The departure of set batsmen and a fine spell from Varun Chakaravarthy in the death overs meant that Sunrisers slipped to their sixth loss.
Brook’s Struggles a Concern for Sunrisers
Meanwhile, Harry Brook’s struggles with the bat have been a concern for Sunrisers. The young opener was dismissed for a duck for the second successive time and has not done much since his century against Kolkata Knight Riders a few weeks back. Lara urged Brook to figure out what’s going wrong for him and assured him of the coaching staff’s support.
Sunrisers Need to Find a Winning Combination
Sunrisers Hyderabad needs to find a way to convert their aggressive intent into match-winning performances. While their bowling department has put their hands up in nearly every match, their batting needs to step up to the plate. Sunrisers’ campaign hangs in the balance, and they need to find a winning combination soon to keep their playoff hopes alive.
